Exploring Treatments For Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are a fairly common condition that affects people of all ages. The condition can occur with a wide range of severity and has a corresponding range of treatment options. Fortunately treating hemorrhoids is fairly straight forward, with  many treatments available that can be effective when used in the safety of your own home. These are a godsend for those with minor cases, but more serious cases where the hemorrhoid has thrombosed can require surgery or cauterization. If you are experiencing symptoms such as unusual blood in your stool, be aware that though unlikely, this can also be an indicator of colon cancer. It is wise to cover all bases by discussing this with your GP.

The question of how to get rid of hemorrhoids is best answered by not getting them in the first place! One of the best ways to avoid hemorrhoids occurring in the first place is to minimize the amount of straining involved with passing a stool. This means avoiding constipation, which in turn might mean making some changes to your diet. Constipation is best avoided by getting plenty of dietary fiber and by keeping up your fluid intake. The extra fiber works by bulking up your stools, so that they can be pushed through easily by the muscles in your colon. Water also helps this process, to stop too much water being absorbed by your colon. Minimizing coffee and cola style drinks might be helpful too, as caffeine is know to contribute to constipation.

If you are already constipated, some doctors may prescribe stool softeners or laxatives if you are at high risk of developing hemorrhoids. Other common home remedies to reduce irritation might include reducing the use of soap that contains sodium lauryl sulfate and any dyes or perfumes. Sitz baths are also a good way to treat some of the symptoms.
