Have Your Fireplace Ready For Cool Weather

The weather is getting cooler and Christmas is almost here. It is time to get ready to spend time with family and friends. If you are lucky you will also sneak in some cozy evenings at home.

One of the things that makes your home cozy is having a warm snuggly house while the air outside is cool and crisp. Some things that can create this stay at home comfortable atmosphere are a warm house, some soft blankets, and a warm fire.

If you are fortunate enough to have a fireplace then you will probably want to make sure that it is in shape for the winter season. A great way to do this is by having your fireplace checked out by a professional. If there is any damage, or leaks, or cracks have them repaired. If your chimney is dirty, or filled with soot, or creosote then have it cleaned.

You don’t want a chimney fire or at the very least a smoky house when you are trying to enjoy your fire. The next thing you want to do is make sure that you have all of the necessary fireplace tools such as a poker, and broom, and shovel. It’s also nice to have a wood basket and some kindling and long fire starter matches.

Once you have all of your fireplace supplies then all you need is some wood. Try to get seasoned wood as opposed to green wood for the best burn. Green wood hasn’t aged enough and is still moist so it will create a smoky fire.

Now that you have a safe and fully functional fireplace and fireplace accessories, it is time for the important stuff. After all even though the warmth and glow of a crackling fire is nice. It is just a background setting.

Now you need a free evening. Some good company, a nice dinner, a warm drink, an adult beverage, or just some fun evening snacks. Christmas cookies, popcorn, or even s’mores will fit the bill. If you are going the adult beverage route, you just may want to opt for cheese and wine, or crudités.

If you are missing the good company or you are the intellectual type you can always opt for a good book and some hot chocolate or cider. These all go well, when curled up in front of a cozy fire. If it is an evening of family fun, games or movies will be a hit. No matter how you spend your cozy evening a fire will help create the festive mood that fits this season.
