Contrary to their name, throw rugs require careful planning and placement in order to have them complement your living space. Whether indoors or outdoors, it’s important to choose rugs that match your décor. Not every color has to match your furnishings however, so you have some leeway in selecting a throw rug for your home. In fact, you can use the colors in the rug to accentuate other colors in your home that may otherwise go unnoticed.
In general, rugs come in standard sizes that makes it easy to select one for your shape and size of room. Many interior designers recommend leaving room between the rug and your furniture, keeping all furniture off the rug. However, you also want to select your throw rug so that it is the same length and width of your furnishings. For larger rooms, 8’x11’ rugs work best, although some people find that the front legs of their furniture need to rest on the rug. To make them even, you may need furniture coasters on the back legs of your fixtures.
Keep in mind that when purchasing throw rugs for your home, you will also need to factor in the cost of a rug pad. Rug pads are used underneath the rugs and keep them in place, preventing the rug from shifting or sliding. Rug pads have more functions than just that however, and make vacuuming easier, playtime softer, and protects the flooring underneath from being scratched.
If you are trying to create different sections in one large room, opt for two or three rugs to create separation. You can choose different shaped rugs, by try to stick to the same color scheme or design in order to keep the room flowing together. Also remember that darker colored throw rugs will create a warm and cozier atmosphere, while lighter colored rugs will make the room appear larger.
