Uninsured Motorist Coverage for Auto Insurance Information

Today, with unemployment at it’s highest, and the high cost of everything from food to auto insurance, there are so many people that must choose between the two. If you had a family to feed, which one would, you choose? Of course, you would buy food for your children before you paid your lone star auto insurance, even though you know how dangerous that can be. Also, it is illegal to not at least carry the minimum insurance per your state. So, this dilemma puts many families at risk. If you don’t buy food for your family they could go hungry, and if you don’t buy auto insurance and you get in an accident you could lose all your assets. How can anyone make a decision like that? It is wrong for people to be put in that position, but if you want to drive a car, you must purchase auto insurance.

If you are lucky enough not to have to make that decision and you have auto insurance, then you must purchase the uninsured/underinsured option on your policy. This way your family is protected if you get into an accident with one of those unfortunate people who can’t afford auto insurance. Statistics show that 13.8 percent of drivers are uninsured in this nation, and the percentage will keep increasing.

There are a few things that you can do to protect you and your family including: 1) don’t drop your UM/UIM coverage – because if you get in an accident with someone who doesn’t have insurance and you are injured, it could take a long time to collect from that person; 2) purchase as much auto insurance as you can afford – match your UM/UIM coverage with your liability limits; 3) practice defensive driving – taking a defensive driving course is a good idea, especially if you live in the states where more than 20% of the drivers don’t have insurance, namely, Florida, Oklahoma, Alabama, New Mexico, and Mississippi; 4) when you get in an accident call the police – or if it’s a minor incident, just be sure and write down all the details for each car involved, or each witness. Also, ask each driver for proof of insurance, and write down the insurance company’s name and phone number.

If you feel that you are paying too much for your current auto insurance, you should go online and do some comparison shopping. Auto insurance is very competitive and there is always another company with more reasonable rates than the next. So, never accept the first one you come to, check out a few to see if you can find a company with more comparable rates.
