Once you have made the decision to go away for a well earned break but that it is not possible to take your dog with you, you will need to start considering where he is going to stay instead. Though many people are lucky enough to have a family member or good friend who will take their pet on, there are just as many who either don’t have this support or who don’t want to impose their dog on someone for such a long time. In these cases you will have to put your pet into a boarding kennel. Before booking them in it is a good idea to make a list of the things that you consider important and then visit a few kennels to help you make your choice. Of course the following advice also applies to those who are putting their dogs into doggie day care while they are at work during the day.
First you need to think about the basics: is the place clean, secure and well ventilated? Is there enough space for a dog the size of yours to be able to get some exercise while shut in? Do they have 24 hour medical cover in case your pet becomes ill while in their care? If you are travelling during colder months then is there an insulated dog kennel?
Once you have confirmed that all the basics are covered then you need to consider whether you would like luxury dog boarding. Places that provide more than the basic care do cost more but tend to include things such as daily dog walking, a bath and groom before they are taken home, obedience or kennel training classes and added extras such as extra plush bedding and toys. If your dog is used to being pampered at home then it might be best if you use this type of facility so that your dog has a home for home.
